Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state early analysis show the liquid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.

A senior political figure stated the attack left him stunned and required to be solved promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
