The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
