More than twenty Olympic champions, coaches and additional world-class competitors have endorsed a letter urging a halt to the execution of a champion boxer and instructor, who is facing execution in the country.

Increasing Global Anger

During rising international outrage over Iran’s increasing application of capital punishment as a tool of suppression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the Iranian regime's decision to maintain the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was arrested for taking part in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and accused of supporting an dissident organization. He has spent half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in seclusion.

“Competition is intended to inspire optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the signatories expressed. “The death penalty of a champion for his political views is a direct assault on these principles and a admonition to every athlete who ventures to voice opinions.

Record of Putting to Death Athletes

The letter pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s situation was not an isolated one and underscored the country's record of putting to death athletes for their beliefs, such as a national team leader, leader of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, Navid Afkari, a young Iranian competitor, faced the death penalty.

Other supporters to the appeal comprise Tracy Edwards, who captained the first female-only team in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the former leader of the soccer side a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was taken into custody in early 2020. The accusations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of public property”. His verdict has been annulled twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His trial was criticized as “grossly unfair” by human rights activists and organizations.

Appeal to United Nations

The appeal to prevent Vafaei Sani’s death sentence is subsequent to a previous letter to the UN high commissioner for rights, endorsed by over a hundred advocates and entities, urging intervention to prevent the sports figure's death.

Execution Crisis

As per reports, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has achieved horrific levels”. In two thousand twenty-three, authorities executed at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a nearly half surge on the previous year. The year before, data showed 972 deaths, marking the peak figure since 2015. In excess of hundreds of people have been put to death so far in 2025.

Activists and protesters are focus, especially in the aftermath of the 2022's protests. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have used the death penalty to suppress opposition, instil fear among the population and strengthen their control on authority.
